Background

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) took part in the IWG Global Summit on Women and Sport, where leaders from around the world discussed ways to strengthen gender equality in sport.

FISU Executive Committee member Rosaura Méndez Gamboa represented the organisation and shared the perspective of university sport during discussions on women’s leadership, participation and long-term institutional change. She said lasting progress depends on maintaining and expanding successful initiatives across all levels of sport, including universities.

Held under the theme “Beyond the Breakthrough,” the summit focused on creating lasting improvements rather than celebrating individual achievements. Discussions covered leadership, participation, investment, innovation and visibility for women in sport.

More than 1,200 representatives from sports organisations, governments, academia and the private sector attended the event. Participants exchanged ideas on policies and programmes that can improve opportunities for women and girls in sport.

Athlete safety was another major focus of the summit. Speakers highlighted the importance of creating safe sporting environments and strengthening measures to prevent harassment and abuse. They also discussed the role of sports organisations in promoting safe and inclusive participation.

FISU said its participation reflects its commitment to creating more leadership opportunities for women within the international university sports community. The organisation added that working with global partners and sharing best practices can help support greater gender equality and encourage more women to take leadership roles in sport.
