Background-

Up to 35 women in Barbados will receive free training in artificial intelligence to build viable businesses, under a new programme launched by the National Organisation of Women (NOW) and AI capability firm Amplifi AI.

NOW president Melissa Savoury-Gittens introduced the programme, called Build a Business with AI, during a press conference at the Ministry of People Empowerment in Warrens.

She said the initiative reflects economic empowerment beyond encouragement, giving women access to skills, knowledge and opportunity, and an understanding of technology reshaping how business is done.

Amplifi AI chief executive Janelle Germain said the programme is built as one structured workflow guiding participants from business idea to execution, with artificial intelligence supporting each step.

She said participants first learn business fundamentals before AI tools are introduced, and stressed that the technology should complement, not replace, foundational knowledge and judgment.

Germain added that the programme helps participants assess revenue potential for their ideas, whether starting from scratch or refining an existing concept, and supports those without a business idea in identifying opportunities suited to their resources.

Savoury-Gittens said the initiative developed out of requests following an earlier digital marketing programme for young people, with NOW aiming to extend similar opportunities to a wider group of women.

The free programme runs across three sessions in September at Solidarity House, with the three strongest businesses invited to pitch before a panel and audience in October. Applications remain open on Amplifi AI’s website.
