Background-
Women playing a leading role in shaping the North East’s growing space and technology industry were celebrated at a major event held as part of the region’s regular events programme.
Space North East England brought together businesses, academics and individuals working across these industries, with talks, discussions and inspirational speeches highlighting the talent and expertise helping both sectors thrive in the region.
More than 70 people joined the event in person and online at NETPark in Sedgefield, hearing from women who are at the forefront of the space and technology industries.
Speakers included Alex Knight, a former engineer who now runs Stemazing, an organisation that trains mentors to encourage more women into STEM industries by working directly with young people, and Marianne Whitfield, VP Sales and Business Development at Newcastle based DHS IT Solutions.
Whitfield has worked in technology for more than 30 years and currently focuses on using data and AI to boost productivity, while continuing to champion opportunities for women in STEM careers.
The audience also heard from Christina Munn of Durham University’s Space Research Centre, Dr Kirsty Lindsay, Associate Professor of Physiotherapy, Aerospace Medicine and Rehabilitation Laboratory at Northumbria University, and Kirsty Donaldson, senior mechanical engineer at Rapid Fluidics.
The event, part of Space North East England’s monthly Cascade programme, showcased the strong position the region holds in the space and related industries, and highlighted the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for those working in the sector.
